March 1-5, 2006 - FESTIVAL - EL Paso: Siglo De Oro Drama Festival. Annual festival that celebrates the literature and linguistic ties still shared by Spain and the border region of Mexico and the United States. The festival brings the best amateur and professional groups to the Chamizal stage, presenting works of the Spanish masters, both in English and Spanish. Participants come from as far away as Puerto Rico, Spain and Jerusalem. Location: Chamizal National Memorial Theatre, 800 S. San Marcial, El Paso. Region: Texas Big Bend Country. Admission is free. April 29, 2006 - OTHER EVENT - El Paso: 15th Annual Thanksgiving Conference & Celebration. On April 30, 1598, A Spanish conquistador, Don Juan De Onate, arrives at the Rio Grande somewhere between present day Socrro & San Elizario, TX. A Mass of Thanksgiving is celebrated, followed by a communal feast. "The Importance of the Native American Contribution to the Spanish Explorer," "The Role of the Salt War in the development of the Hispanic Community," Historical re-enactments, gunfights, native American arts & crafts, food booths. May 6-7, 2006 - SPORTING EVENT - Del Rio: 29th Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Riding Competition. Non-stop action and live entertainment make this event a must-see. The first stand-alone bull riding in the country, it honors George Paul, World Champion Bull Rider 1968. Paul rode 79 bulls consecutively without being thrown, a record, which stands unbroken. Known as the "Academy Awards of Bull Riding", with top ranked bulls, bull riders, and rodeo bullfighters, it's pure excitement from start to finish. Del Rio & Ciudad Acuna attractions add more fun. June 1 - August 15, 2006 - OTHER EVENT - Marfa: Marfa Glider Club Texas Glider Rally. Gliders return to skies over the Marfa - Fort Davis area each summer to enjoy the exceptional thermal updrafts. Pilots from across the USA gather to fly "cross country" for distances of over 500 miles. Marfa Airport was the site of the 1970 World Gliding Contest and several US National Competitions. Last years performance by "Bo Diddley" and special appearance the Martin Brothers attracted more than 25,000 people to Texas Avenue where the streets were filled with the best cars in town and awesome choppers. July 1, 2006 - FESTIVAL - Odessa: Firecracker Fandango and Independence Day Parade. A motorcycle event where there will be two-wheeled games all weekend along with barbecue and general good times. November 4, 2006 - OTHER EVENT - Del Rio: Holiday Parade of Lights on Lake Amistad. Enjoy the Holiday parade of lights on Lake Amistad when boats are covered in lights.
