Healthcare Resources
The Medical Services industry
is well represented in San Antonio, with the majority of the
facilities located in the South Texas Medical Center area.
The main facilities of the Center include the University of
Texas Health Science Center, as well as nine major hospitals
(one of which is a veterans' hospital), two psychiatric
rehabilitation hospitals, and two physical rehabilitation
centers.
The University of Texas Health Science Center employs
approximately 4,612 and has schools of medicine, dentistry,
nursing and health sciences, and a graduate school of
biomedical sciences. The entire South Texas Medical Center
area has 23,800 employees, 3876 licensed beds, and an annual
budget of approximately $1.594 billion. There was $109.096
million in construction in progress in 1995 and $ 75.191
million is planned for 1996-2001.
There are numerous other medical facilities outside the
boundaries of the South Texas Medical Center, including 25
short-term general hospitals, two children's psychiatric
hospitals, two state hospitals, and two Department of
Defense hospitals.
