Frommer's Review
This lushly landscaped Spanish hacienda-style hotel -- converted from a
19th-century seminary in 1968 -- not only oozes character, but is also
convenient. It sits right on the Paseo del Río, just a block from the
Majestic Theater. Moorish arches, Mexican tile, a central patio,
wrought-iron balconies, and antique pieces in every nook and cranny combine
to create a low-glitz, high-tone Mediterranean atmosphere. The layout is a
bit mazelike -- the directionally challenged, like me, may find themselves
wandering in circles -- but staff discretion and a willingness to cater to
special requests make this hotel the pick for many of San Antonio's
high-profile visitors (their entourages no doubt steer them in the right
direction).
Guest rooms are equally low profile and high-toned, with rich green,
gold, and burgundy draperies and bedspreads complementing the rough-hewn
beamed ceilings, and brick walls. The more expensive quarters boast
balconies overlooking the River Walk, but the interior courtyard views are
fine, too. The hotel's dining room, Las Canarias, serves up a
terrific river view with its excellent American regional cuisine. The
opening of a sister property, the Watermark Hotel, just across the river
means easy access to that hotel's excellent spa. Guests at La Mansión can
also pay an extra $15 for privileges at the Watermark's gym, whirlpool, and
pool (or free with a spa treatment).
