Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A: A virus that causes infection and inflammation of the liver.  Hepatitis A is found in the stool of an infected person and can be transmitted through improper handling of food or through oral-anal sexual contact. 

 

Do I need testing for hepatitis A?

Treatment Available:  There is no one specific treatment for hepatitis A.  Call a physician if you think you have contracted hepatitis A.

Symptoms of hepatitis A: 

  • jaundice
  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea and vomiting
  • low-grade fever
  • pale or clay colored stools
  • dark urine
  • generalized itching

You should be tested for Hepatitis A if :

  • have had contact with anyone who has hepatitis A   
  • are traveling to a country where testing for hepatitis A is a VISA requirement
  • have ever had unsafe sex
  • are/were employed or had contact with daycare centers and health care institutions such as nursing homes
  • have used intravenous drugs or had contact with someone who uses intravenous drugs
  • have had contact with anyone with poor personal hygene
