Hackberry. The Little Carver Civic Center is
behind the Carver Center.

Where It's Been
During segregation, the building that houses the
Carver was a "colored library." In the '30s, it
was a place where greats like Ella Fitzgerald,
Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie "Bird" Parker took
the stage. Today, the ever-growing Carver
fosters the creativity of all cultures, with
special emphasis on African-American heritage.
Where It Is Now
Recent funding from Spurs' David Robinson has
furthered the advancement of outreach and
educational programs. Each season, the lineup of
dance, music and theater gets more diverse and
exciting. The best part? Tickets to see Mavis
Staples or the New York City Opera National
Company are very reasonable (about $20). The
gallery showcases everything from fiber art to
pottery by global and regional artists. Classes
in jazz studies, ceramics, African hand drumming
and many other subjects are available; some are
free.
