The Mexican Cultural Institute is a natural for a city
with a Mexican heritage as strong as San Antonio's. An
extension of the National University of Mexico
(Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), the Mexican
Cultural Institute promotes Mexican culture through art
exhibits, photography, films, lectures, workshops,
concerts, dance performances and theatre. The Mexican
Cultural Institute also features a library with Spanish
language literature as well as information about the
arts and crafts of Mexico, cuisine south of the border
and Mexican history. For shoppers in search of Mexican
crafts, the Mexican Cultural Institute offers a gift
shop filled with folk art and crafts...at attractive
prices.
The Mexican Cultural Institute usually makes its home at
HemisFair Park. But because of construction projects
underway at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, the
Mexican Cultural Institute has moved to a temporary
location on Main Street. There, visitors may enjoy
Mexican pastry at a cafe or browse through the Galeria
Mario Orozco Rivera. Another art gallery affiliated with
the Mexican Cultural Institute, the Casa Mexicana
Gallery, remains at HemisFair Park.
The Mexican Cultural Institute was founded in 1972.
