San Antonio's Brackenridge Park has delighted Alamo City
residents and tourists alike for generations. Created
from land donated to the City of San Antonio in 1899,
the 343-acre Brackenridge Park hosts a variety of
popular attractions and outdoor activities. Among the
best-known attractions at Brackenridge Park is the San
Antonio Zoo and Aquarium. Recognized as one of the
finest zoos in the U.S., the San Antonio Zoo is home to
3,500-plus animals representing 750 species, including
the endangered whooping crane. Another long-time
favorite at Brackenridge Park is the Brackenridge Eagle,
always a big hit with the youngsters. The miniature
train travels two-and-a-half miles around Brackenridge
Park...pulled along by a replica of an 1863 Central
Pacific Huntington steam locomotive.
Yet another key attraction at Brackenridge Park is the
Japanese Tea Gardens, also known as the Sunken Gardens.
The Japanese Tea Gardens sits upon the former site of
the rock quarry that produced the limestone used to
construct the Texas State Capitol. Highlights of the
Japanese Tea Gardens include a 60-foot waterfall.
Brackenridge Park is also home to the Sunken Gardens
Theatre, an outdoor theater that hosts concerts,
theatrical presentations and festivals. The Witte Museum
is located just outside the park.
Brackenridge Park also showcases the par-72, 6,185-yard
Brackenridge Golf Course. Designed by A.W. Tillinghast
in 1915, the Brackenridge Park layout is said to be the
oldest 18-hole public golf course in the Lone Star
State. The site of the inaugural Texas Open in 1922, the
Brackenridge Golf Course holds the distinction of
belonging to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and the Texas
Open Hall of Fame. Visitors to Brackenridge Park may
also enjoy hiking, jogging, biking and picnicking.
Brackenridge Park is located along the headwaters of the
San Antonio River, approximately two miles north of
downtown San Antonio. The main entrance to Brackenridge
Park is in the 2800 block of North Broadway.
